EArly History
Hip Hop originated in the Black and Latino urban parts of New York during the late 1960's. From this genre, came rap, break-dancing, graffiti, and street types of sports-games. However, the name hip hop was not used until a couple years later by a legendary DJ, Africa Bambaaataa. No particular person invented Hip Hop but one Jamaican man, Clive Campbell who was nicknamed Kool Herc is called the main founder. After Herc started rapping, other DJs started popping up and making music. When they added rythymic texts into their music it became known as rap (Genius, 2018).
Kool Herc known as the Father of Hip Hop was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1955. He emigrated to the Bronx in 1967 when he was 12 years of age. He spent a lot of time in the weight room in high school. This fact along with his height helped nickname him the Hercules. His first deeja gig started during his sister's birthday party. He then threw many parties in his family's house and recreation room. Herc became more interested in the break section of the song than the other parts. His desire to capture this part of the song with just the beat for a longer period would become an important part of Hip Hop. Herc would purchase two copies of the same record and put them on two tables right next to each other during a party. He would play the beat of one record, stop it, and then play the same beat on the other record. This was an early form of looping (repeating) (Kool Herc, 2010).
This man would search everywhere to add anything to his new style of music. His first job started as a DJ in Twilight Zone in 1973. He wanted to play in another place called Hevalo but it did not work out until later in his career. Herc's fame grew especially with his loud sound system being the loudest one in the neighborhood. His fame eventually landed him into the Hevalo in 1975. With his help, he was nicknamed the b boy or break boy. To avoid any foul play from other DJs, he would soak off the labels of his records. When Herc did not have enough time to talk to his audience, he got the first ever hip hop MC named Coke La Rock (Kool Herc, 2010).
Kool's career began to go downhill with other groups like Grandmaster Flash, Furious Five, and Bambaataa's various groups came with their new styles and put Kool at a disadvantage. After being stabbed three times at his own party, he never fully recovered. Today, he appears in New York and Europe from time to time but is not a popular artist anymore. His music is not listened to very often today. However, without his hard work, hip hop might not have become so huge as it is today (Kool Herc, 2010).
